Bought 8 of these for a Synology 1812 NAS. After a couple of hours spent upgrading the drives' firmware (pretty easy with Seagate tools) they were installed, giving blazing, trouble-free performance in the NAS.

You will need to update the firmware on these drives. They make a regular chitch noise every minute or so. The firmware update reduces the noise but does not remove it. Otherwise a good drive.

Very good drive but if you are going to use them in a nas you need to make sure that they have the latest version of firmware otherwise they will cause problems.

One thing I didn;t realise when buying one of these was that the warranty period is only 1 year. Yes 1 year on a hard disk. I generally buy Western Digital or Hitachi HDDs. I obviously made the mistake of going with the current cheapest 3TB drive. Won't make that mistake again. 1 year? Come on Seagate you're not doing yourself any favours.

Very fast drive (167 Mbytes/sec read, 138 write!), but make sure your motherboard is UEFI to use all of the disk. A GPT partition table is also needed - look for "format 3tb linux" on Google - first hit gives you the commands. I only use 64-bit Linux now, but John's 32-bit Linux should manage a GPT fine.

32 bit Linux OS gives a max 2Tb ext4 partition but will put the rest into another partition given motherboard support bangs for buck when thinking power and bus usage

Superb 3Tb hard drive from Seagate and at a really great price. I installed it on my 24inch iMac 2008 EMC 2211 and it works a treat. Thanks Novatech :o)
