For the purpose of mobility, laptops run on lithium-ion batteries when they are not connected to a mains supply. A downside to this convenience however is that charging (and the overheating of) these batteries sees deposits form inside the battery, effecting the electrolytes that are crucial for ion transport. This reduces the cells capacity – and therefore; life span – over time, meaning the need to purchase a replacement is likely to occur at some point.
