I want to add a second review because I have now been uploading data to it for over two days solid. The discs have been hammered solidly for that time without a break. The box, which is very neat looking is not even slightly warm and I have not heard a whisper from the fan. It is managing a steady 2M/s over a wireless network without a murmur. I have had a whole shed load of NAS over the years and none have really lived up to the promise. They have all been slow, noisey and hot. I think this could be the business. As for the guy who could not access things remotely, try using LogMeIn - as a temporary fix whilst working out the fine details it is brilliant. I can even access this kit from my mobile phone and iPod touch!!

Took 5 minutes to assemble with drives and a further five minutes to connect to the powerline and get up and running. The interface is well laid out and most things can be done with little expertise. As a server it is first rate. It is also quiet. Highly recommended.

Bought one of these so I could access my files while working away. It's supposed to be easy to set up, it isn't! A week later after several helpdesk requests and forum searches I'm still no closer to getting remote access to the thing. If you are fortunate enough to have a router that is supported by Synology software configuration you may be OK. If not you will need a pretty in-depth knowledge of port forwarding, DNS and other network configuration methods.

Best two drive NAS you can buy, have two of these, with latest updated software covers everything you could possibly need, and more than just a NAS storage device. I remote access two units over internet seamlessly from UK and China where I work. QNAP is good (yes I also own one of these) but software lacks the variety Synology have to offer and update often. Turrent users with iOS device should go try SynoDS perfect tool for remote your Synology device. Always use same make of drives with unit and do check with Synology compatible drives. Luckly Novatech seems to always have the best ones at very good price.

Since writing my earlier comments, I have discovered that the available software includes Logitech Music Server. This means that it is possible to stream music from this NAS directly to a Squeezebox, without the need for an intermediate PC.

Simple to set up, excellent supplied software, good clear manual (albeit electronic, not printed). Less than two hours from getting it home to having it functioning as a music server to my streamer (and that includes time spent eating lunch!). The worst problem I had was in finding the instruction in the manual to instal a particular supplied software package. For my purposes, it turned out that I needed "Media Server" rather than "Audio Station". Until Media Server was installed, my streamer couldn't see the NAS. As soon as it was, it could.
