The size of my drives was 64.9 GB. That is salesman's GB, ie 10^9. So well in excess of 64GB in strong contrast to some "64GB" drives sold by a competitor. So that is excellent. My drives came formatted as FAT32. That gave 61GB free space in the filesystem. I tested the raw media speed (no file system overheads) and had dd if=/dev/mmcblk0p1 ibs=8K count=1M obs=8K of=/dev/sdb1 1048576 0 records in 1048576 0 records out 8589934592 bytes (8.6 GB) copied, 881.828 s, 9.7 MB/s so an average write speed 0f 9.7MB/s, which is very good at this price. The read speed was 25.1 MB/s average over a 34GB transfer. Again, excellent for this sort of device. Things get much slower when reading and writing in the FAT32 filesystem. The write speed on a almost empty disc started out around 2.1MB/s, seemed to peak around 40GB at 6.3MB/s, and ended a little lower. Over a 61GB write, the average write speed was 5.48 MB/s. Reading from the filesystem was much faster with an average of 17.21MB/s. I reformatted my drives with an ext4 filesystem (no journal to reduce write cycles). Writing into the ext4 fs started even slower than on FAT32, but then got to higher speeds as the drive filled up. It peaked around 48GB at 7.1MB/s and was still at 7.0MB/s at 57GB. The average writing speed was 4.42MB/s, which was because of the very slow speed initially. This phenomenon of initially slow speeds seems to be typical of this sort of drive: I had the same experience with drives from other sources. Of course the file systems are optimized for rotating media, not flash. So very good value for money.

The highest capacity USB stick I have seen at this sort of price range. As with other USB storage annoyingly comes formatted as FAT32 but this isn''t a lasting problem. Larger than the average drive some sometimes makes fitting things in adjacent slots tricky but no big deal.
