Overview

Sometimes it's not the large jobs that offer the biggest challenge to Novatech - it can be the smaller ones that require the most ingenuity.

Challenge

On the face of it, a project involving a single server and 24 PCs and monitors is small beer in the computer world. But when the equipment is to be used in a prison environment it is something more than an ordinary contract.

Cardiff Prison is located in the centre of the Welsh capital and houses some 800 adult male prisoners, mainly category B and C offenders though almost 100 are serving life sentences. The prison’s education wing places a strong emphasis on training and preparation for release as it has been established by numerous reviews that prison education reduces reoffending rates.

Novatech was asked to provide technology suitable for use by both staff and prisoners. Any equipment supplied had to be robust and installed to ensure it could endure heavy usage and withstand any potential damage. In particular the PCs had to be tamper-proof.

Solution

Novatech was asked to provide technology suitable for use by both staff and prisoners. Any equipment supplied had to be robust and installed to ensure it could endure heavy usage and withstand any potential damage. In particular the PCs had to be tamper-proof.

After detailed discussion and assessment, the prison’s account manager at Novatech, Simon, was able to provide:

• One server, 24 PCs and monitors with tamper-proofing screws and fittings.

• Specialised teachers’ desks with built-in PCs and retractable monitors.

• Educational projectors and interactive white boards with concealed wiring. Novatech was able to ensure the equipment and installation met all the prison’s educational and security requirements. Furthermore, the prison had the reassurance of Novatech’s support in the event of any technical issues.

Result

“In the prison environment all equipment has to be secure for safety and monetary reasons. I started using Novatech in 2006 as they are able to provide the bespoke solutions I was looking for. We have used Novatech for the last 5 years for equipment installations; our main concern regarding tampering from prisoners was solved by the installation team providing more secure trunking and robust solid cabling. I have recommended Novatech to many of my colleagues within other prisons who, like me, are very happy with the service and equipment provided.”
